On the course

Well, what a month we have had. Absolutely no rain has been recorded in our rain gauge for more than 6 weeks now and in reality perhaps more like 8 weeks. The last drought similar to this was back in 1996 and then the previous drought to 1996 was back in 1976, it seems we are on a 20 year cycle. So enjoy the heat while it lasts because we may not see another summer such as this for 20 years.

The course is playing very different to its usual conditions, the fairways are running and approaches are extremely firm. The greens are performing perfectly and this is down to the work put in by our irrigation tech who has been hand watering greens, tees and bunker edges daily for weeks.

Smaller task completed during the last month have involved topping up sand in bunkers on 5 and 7. Adjusting and cutting back meadow rough to allow for a fairer shot and improved playability across the course. Continual summer verticutting and sand dressing of greens and approaches. Trimming over hanging branches on the 12th and 8th Tees and lots of what I class as course detailing which are small individual tasks which collectively make a big difference to the visual presentation.

The fortnight ahead

I am sure the rains will eventually arrive and when they do all will be back to normality, for us this will mean keeping on top of growth on all surfaces, repairing turf loss around bunker edges and green banks and keeping greens performing at their peak.

At the beginning of August we have our maintenance planned for Greens, Tees and Approaches, this will involve coring and heavily topdressing.

For the moment, keep enjoying the weather and enjoying the golf course playing very different to what perhaps we would usually expect in summer conditions.

Happy Golfing.
